What we actually are

There is a distinction that shapes everything about how we work, and it is worth being blunt about it: a supplier sells you fixtures; a lighting designer decides how light behaves.

We are paid a design fee. We do not take a margin on hardware. That single fact removes the incentive to specify more fixtures than a space needs — and it is why a considered lighting scheme often costs less overall than a default ceiling grid, not more. Fewer sources, better placed, specified correctly the first time.

The design comes first. The fixtures are the last step — chosen to deliver a scheme that already exists on paper.

How we work

We work as an embedded partner rather than a late-stage supplier — alongside architects, interior designers, MEP consultants and project managers, from the first concept sketch through to the final executive detail.

That timing is not a preference, it is the whole difference. Ceilings, coves, conduit routes and joinery are decided early. A lighting plan that arrives after the gypsum is closed has already lost most of its options; it can only choose fittings for holes someone else positioned. Lighting decided too late is lighting that compromises the design.

We study your architectural plans and interior designs, then return a clear, honest estimate of cost and timeline — before you commit to anything.

You see it before you build it

We show you how the light will actually feel, as full visualisation rather than technical drawings alone, so there are no surprises on handover night.

Built for the site

Executive drawings precise enough that your contractor never has to guess — coordinated down to the gypsum, the furniture, the wood and the marble.

The four layers

Every scheme we produce is built from four deliberate layers, each controlled independently:

• Ambient — the quiet foundation; a wash of light that sets the mood and gives a space depth before anything else is added.
• Architectural — light that reveals structure, following the façades, volumes and lines the architect drew so they are seen exactly as intended.
• Accent — precision over power; directed light that draws the eye to the material, art and craftsmanship worth noticing.
• Atmosphere — the layer that makes a space feel alive after dark: warmth, drama and occasion, engineered on purpose.

Scope runs from concept and mood board, through documentation — reflected ceiling plans, luminaire schedules, control schemes, lux calculation reports — to on-site supervision during installation and the final aiming and commissioning after dark. A scheme that is never commissioned is never really delivered: adjustable fixtures arrive aimed at the factory default.

The work is offered in three packages, from concept only through to full supervision.

Why we publish

Most people commission lighting design once. There is no second project to learn from, and the difference between a good decision and an expensive one only becomes visible after the ceilings are closed.

So we write the guides we wish clients had before they called us — what the fee actually covers, how to read a portfolio, which mistakes cost the most, what to prepare before the first meeting. They are free, they name the things suppliers would rather not explain, and you can read them without ever contacting us.
