At night, a building has no daylight, no sky, no context — only what you choose to light. Facade lighting design is the discipline of deciding what the building says after dark, and it is the most public decision in any project: everyone who passes sees it, whether or not they ever go inside.

The most common failure: lighting everything
The default approach is to place floodlights in front of a building and wash the whole elevation evenly. It is fast, it is cheap, and it destroys the architecture. Even illumination removes shadow, and shadow is what makes depth, texture and form readable. The result is a flat bright rectangle where an architect designed proportion and rhythm.
Good facade lighting is subtractive. It decides what not to light. Darkness is a design material — the unlit parts are what give the lit parts meaning.
The core techniques
Grazing
Placing the light source very close to the surface and aiming it along the face. Every bump, joint and irregularity casts a small shadow, so the material's texture becomes visible. This is the technique for stone, brick, board-marked concrete and any deliberately textured surface. Move the same fixture a metre away and the texture disappears entirely.
Wall washing
The opposite intent: even, shadow-free illumination across a surface. Used for smooth planes, signage backgrounds, and where you want a clean field of light rather than texture. Washing a textured stone wall wastes the material; grazing a flat plaster wall reveals every imperfection. Matching technique to surface is most of the craft.
Uplighting structure
Lighting columns, piers and structural rhythm from below to emphasise the building's vertical order. Effective and dramatic, but it is also the technique most responsible for glare and light pollution when aimed carelessly — the beam must be tightly controlled and stop at the top of the element, not continue into the sky.
Silhouette and backlighting
Lighting the surface behind an element so the element itself reads as a dark shape. Excellent for screens, mashrabiya, perforated panels and canopies. It is often the most elegant option and frequently the cheapest, because you light one plane instead of many objects.
Integrated and concealed light
Light built into the architecture itself — a recess under a coping, a slot in a soffit, a concealed line along a datum. The most sophisticated approach, and the one that requires the earliest involvement, because it must be designed into the building fabric rather than attached to it later.
Landscape: the ground the building stands on
A brilliantly lit facade rising out of a black site looks unfinished. The landscape is part of the composition. Light the trees from below to give the site vertical structure, mark path edges at low level rather than lighting the whole path, and use water surfaces deliberately — moving water catches light, still water reflects the facade and can double its presence.
Keep every source concealed or shielded. Visitors should experience the effect and never identify the fixture.
Glare, spill and neighbours
Facade lighting is public, which makes glare a genuine liability rather than an aesthetic issue. Light aimed carelessly reaches drivers, neighbouring windows and the sky. Beyond the courtesy, obtrusive light is increasingly regulated and is a common reason schemes are ordered to be modified after installation.
Practical controls: tight beam angles, shields and louvres, aiming that terminates on the building rather than past it, and mounting positions that keep sources out of normal sightlines.
Colour: use with discipline
Colour-changing facade systems are widely available and widely misused. Slowly shifting saturated colour across an entire elevation rarely flatters architecture and dates quickly. The more durable approach is a considered white scheme as the permanent identity, with colour reserved for genuine occasions — national days, events, brand moments. A building that is red every night says nothing; a building that is red on one night says something.
Controls, maintenance and the real climate
Facades run every night, so the scheme must survive operationally, not just look good on opening night.
- Timing and dimming. Astronomical time switches for sunset, plus a reduced late-night level. Full output at 3am serves nobody and burns budget.
- Ingress protection. Exterior fixtures need appropriate sealing for dust, sand and washdown — this region is harder on hardware than most.
- Heat. Ambient temperatures here shorten the life of poorly specified drivers and LEDs. Specify for the actual climate, not a European datasheet.
- Access. If a fixture cannot be reached safely, it will not be maintained. Design access in from the start.
- Consistency. Use as few fixture types and colour temperatures as possible so replacements match years later.
When to start
Facade lighting must begin during architectural design. Concealed details, recesses, mounting points, cable routes and power positions all have to exist in the building before it is built. A facade scheme designed after handover is limited to surface-mounted fixtures pointed at the building — which is exactly the flat result everyone is trying to avoid.
